Practical uses
- 01
Respond to injuries or medical emergencies at work or in the community.
- 02
Qualify for patient-care or health-support positions.
- 03
Meet employer requirements for roles that need certified responders.
How to get it
- 1.
Enroll in a state-approved EMT course: 120–180 hours over 3–6 months, often via community college, fire department, or EMS academy.
- 2.
Pass the instructor-administered psychomotor (hands-on skills) exam built into the course.
- 3.
Register with NREMT and receive your Authorization to Test.
- 4.
Pay the $104 exam fee and schedule at Pearson VUE or via remote proctoring.
- 5.
Pass the computer-adaptive cognitive exam: scaled score of 950 on a 100–1500 scale, 2-hour limit.
- 6.
Apply for state EMT certification using your NREMT credential; recertify every 2 years by exam or 40 CE credits.
Study tips
- Practice patient assessment out loud — the psychomotor stations are scored on saying the steps, not just doing them.
- The cognitive exam weights airway, breathing, and circulation heavily; over-study those over trauma trivia.
