Powered Industrial Truck (Forklift) Operator
USFC
Practical uses
- 01
Legally operate powered equipment in warehouses, yards, and job sites.
- 02
Load, unload, and move materials faster and safer on a crew.
- 03
Earn higher hourly rates as a certified equipment operator.
How to get it
- 1.
Find an OSHA-compliant forklift operator training program that includes both formal instruction and practical operation.
- 2.
Complete classroom training on stability triangles, load capacity plates, steering differences, and pedestrian safety.
- 3.
Perform a practical evaluation on the specific classification of truck you will operate — sit-down, stand-up, and pallet jacks are evaluated separately.
- 4.
Pass both the classroom and practical portions under a qualified evaluator.
- 5.
Receive your employer-issued operator certification and expect re-evaluation or refresher training every 3 years, or sooner after an incident.
Study tips
- Training must match the classification of truck you will actually operate; do not assume one card covers every lift.
- OSHA also requires refresher training after a near-miss, accident, or observed unsafe operation, even before the 3-year mark.
