ACI (American Concrete Institute)
Practical uses
- 01
Work on residential and commercial job sites with recognized skills.
- 02
Read plans, use tools correctly, and meet building code expectations.
- 03
Enter a registered apprenticeship or get hired by contractors.
How to get it
- 1.
Register for an ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I program through a local sponsoring group (concrete associations, community colleges, or DOT programs).
- 2.
Study the ASTM test methods the program covers — slump, air content, temperature, unit weight, and cylinder fabrication.
- 3.
Take the written exam covering the ASTM procedures and standards.
- 4.
Pass the hands-on performance exam where an examiner watches you perform each test correctly.
- 5.
Receive your five-year ACI certification card — renew with a written exam before it expires.
Study tips
- Practice the hands-on tests until each step is automatic — most failures come from missing a small required step, not the written exam.
- Memorize the ASTM numbers and tolerances; the written exam asks for them directly.
