Fall Protection Competent Person
OSHA 1926 Subpart M
Practical uses
- 01
Qualify for job sites that require documented safety training before day one.
- 02
Spot and correct hazards on a crew, reducing injuries and lost time.
- 03
Move toward foreman or safety-lead roles that check others' compliance.
How to get it
- 1.
Take an OSHA-recognized Fall Protection Competent Person course that combines online instruction with hands-on practice.
- 2.
Study the hierarchy of controls, guardrail requirements, and anchorage strength rules for the work you will supervise.
- 3.
Complete the hands-on portion: inspect harnesses, lanyards, and anchorages; demonstrate proper donning and fitting.
- 4.
Pass the written or skills assessment administered by the trainer.
- 5.
Get a certificate and keep records; OSHA expects the competent person to be named in site safety plans.
Study tips
- Know the harness ABCs: Anchor, Body wear, Connecting device. If one is wrong, the whole system fails.
- Inspect fall protection gear before every use; a single frayed lanyard can remove a worker from service.
