Practical uses
- 01
Install, test, and maintain network, fiber, or computer systems.
- 02
Troubleshoot connectivity and hardware problems for clients or employers.

How to get it
- 1.
Take a fiber optic training course through one of the FOA's 200+ approved training organizations — community colleges, technical schools, and union programs are approved sponsors. (Experienced techs can instead qualify through FOA's direct path with two years of documented fiber experience.)
- 2.
Complete the hands-on labs in the course: cable preparation, fusion and mechanical splicing, connector termination, and OTDR/power-meter testing.
- 3.
Pass the written exam, administered through your approved training organization.
- 4.
Receive your FOA CFOT certification — it is valid for three years.
- 5.
Renew every three years for a $100 renewal fee — one renewal covers all FOA certifications you hold.
Study tips
- Take FOA's free 'Fiber U Basic Fiber Optics' online course before your class — it is the recommended prep and costs nothing.
- Practice splicing and termination until your loss numbers are consistently clean; hands-on work is what employers actually test you on after you are certified.
