How to get it
- 1.
Find an ANSI Z390.1-compliant H2S training provider — many oilfield safety companies offer half-day classes.
- 2.
Attend the classroom portion covering gas properties, exposure limits, and health effects.
- 3.
Practice with a four-gas monitor and don a respirator or escape pack under instructor supervision.
- 4.
Complete the skills check and pass the short written assessment.
- 5.
Receive your card, valid 1–3 years depending on the provider and employer requirements.
Study tips
- Understand the ppm thresholds: 10 ppm is the 8-hour exposure limit, 100 ppm causes serious health effects, and 300 ppm is immediately dangerous.
- Never rely on smell to detect H2S — it deadens your olfactory nerves quickly.
