MSHA Part 46 New Miner Training
US DOL/MSHA
Practical uses
- 01
Qualify for job sites that require documented safety training before day one.
- 02
Spot and correct hazards on a crew, reducing injuries and lost time.
- 03
Move toward foreman or safety-lead roles that check others' compliance.
How to get it
- 1.
Confirm your site is covered by MSHA Part 46 (surface non-metal). Part 48 covers underground and metal mines, which have different rules.
- 2.
Enroll in an MSHA-recognized Part 46 New Miner course, either in person or through an approved online blended provider.
- 3.
Complete 24 hours of training on mine hazards, emergency procedures, equipment safety, and health rights.
- 4.
Pass the course evaluation and receive a New Miner training certificate.
- 5.
After your first year, complete an 8-hour annual refresher to keep your training current.
Study tips
- Keep all training records — MSHA inspectors routinely ask for them during mine visits.
- Contractors are treated like miners for Part 46; do not assume the rule only applies to full-time employees.
